Nonna’s Sugar Cookies
This recipe was given to me by a friend at the bank I used to work with. She was Italian and this cookie was one that her Italian grandmother made every Christmas. It is very different from the North American sugar cookies that are fat and covered with yummy buttercream. Not that I don’t love those cookies too. But this one is so different and just so good.
I have made these over and over for a mission that I bake for every Saturday, as they have a dinner every Saturday night and I bake for about 65 people, who are predominantly Mexican. They love these cookies. Eat them all up every time I bake them and this recipe makes about 5 dozen cookies.
You should try these Sugar Cookies. You could even start with ½ batch so you can try them out without having 5 dozen of them. I promise these are worth making over and over again. And like most cookies, these freeze really well.
These are one of my favorite sugar cookie recipes. They are unusual. Not fancy but really good. And easy to make too! Just make sure to flatten them out before baking.
Ingredients
1 Cup Unsalted Butter, softened
¾ Cups Vegetable Oil
2 Eggs
4 Cups Flour
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
1 teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
1 Cup Powdered Sugar
1 Cup Granulated Sugar
Directions
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Mix flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl and set aside.
Cream butter, oil, eggs, sugars and vanilla extract together until mixed thoroughly.
Add dry ingredients and mix until completely combined.
Prepare cookie sheets with parchment paper or a silpat baking mat. Roll dough into a uniform size, and roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on cookie sheets and flatten with your hand or another implement until they are flat, and bake for 7 to 10 minutes until the edges of the cookies just begin to brown. Cool on wire racks and enjoy.
